"My introduction to the tiny tropical Island of Bimini was through the Blackbeard dive cruises (1997 & 1998). We lived on a 65-ft sailboat for a week on each trip. In the middle of the week we spent a night on shore, exploring Bimini. After my 2n'd trip, I was inspired to return for an extended stay. So far, I have resided on Bimini a total of more than 17 months, on nine subsequent stays, 1999-2007. Each visit is a creative venture resulting in a Bimini art show, eight, thus far. The lure of the Island continues to tug on my heart. I fell in love with Bimini and its people. I do my artwork there in the laid-back Island atmosphere, and experience the spiritual rejuvination that always accompanies it. I feel as much at home on the Island, as I do back in Wisconsin with my family and friends." (N.H.K.) |

SOJOURNERS FROM WISCONSIN FIND NORBERT KOX IN BIMINI ART EXHIBIT "Deep Waters: Glory and Shame" We had seen signs that there would be an art showing by a local Bimini artist at the All Age School. ...But our biggest surprise was yet to come. At 8:00 they showed a video on Cox's work that had just been aired in Britain as part of a series on apochryphal artists. (Yes, the school had a beautiful new TV and VCR.) After the video we were talking to some of the local people in the audience, telling them about our boat and that we had come from Wisconsin. They told us that Norbert Cox (Kox) was from Wisconsin, too. He just came to Bimini in the winter to paint. They asked where in Wisconsin we were from, and we said "Green Bay". They said "That's where Norbert was from, too.". Suddenly, things began to click together in Dan's mind and he realized that he knew Norbert Cox (Kox) back home. They had met while exploring some of the local caves in Wisconsin, like the Chilton Nature Center and Maribel. Norb had been the editor of the newsletter for the local spelunking group. It's hard to believe that we spent six months to get off the shores of the U.S. only to find someone from back home on the first island we visit. |
